The Source of Freedom

"I believe all these things because freedom is not America's gift to the world, it is the Almighty God's gift to every man and woman in this world."
The RNC was on TV tonight when I came home and they were waiting for President Bush to accept the nomination. I didn't turn it on and I expected to be bored, but I ended up thinking that it was a really well written speech. I thought it ran the gammut, from deadly serious to light-hearted and self-depreciating. I thought some stuff was wading a little deep into you know what, and some of it was really reaching to put a good spin on some stuff that fell pretty flat, but overall, I liked it. I thought it was even funny how in one instance he put himself next to President Clinton and had Kerry opposing both of them.

Well, let's be clear, God gave us free will, which is not exactly the same as freedom. Freedom implies we can say or do whatever we want, whereas according to God's law there are Commandments (10 if I remember right) as well as a metric ton of addendums telling us what we can't do. But because God didn't create robots in the book of Genesis, he allowed us to choose for ourselves. There are people who believe in various religions, including Christianity, and those religions impose restrictions on personal freedom. That is a choice and one most religious people freely make. Likewise, there are people who live in countries where they are not free to do everything they want. Free will is God's gift, freedom is a mixed blessing at best, and I for one dispute him handing out anything so big to the entirety of humankind. Since leaving the garden of eden, we've pretty much had to earn everything, with the exception of God's love and forgiveness.

Not sure where all this is going exactly, but, I guess I wanted to make it clear... George Bush was wrong. Not in an evil way, rather in an idealistic way. I can't fault him for that... no wait... I can and I do.
