New Diet Week: All Bets Off

I've been doing poorly since Rachel's birthday. I did good that week until it was time for cake. Then I enjoyed leftover cake and ice cream for some time to come. Friday was an incredibly low point, however. Every possible thing that was supposed to be off-limits? I had. Everything. I'd like to blame a challenging/stressful lunch-time meeting at which there was cookies, or the birthday celebration for June staff people that afternoon. But I have no one to blame but myself.

I'm not gigantic like the guy in the link above who's lost half his body weight, but I'm also not going to be like this guy who takes pictures of what he eats.

But I gotta do more.

I walked the dog for 20 minutes this morning and am working on a cappuccino delight slimfast right now.

Just did 50 jumping jacks. I'd do more, but it's been awhile since I did any, so they're a little harder to do, plus it's freaking 85 degrees in the office again today. *sigh*

So why am I off to get a cup of coffee?

Cup of coffee #2, and some bottled water and a bag of Cheez-Its that were packed with my lunch. Oddly, they look like Sponge Bob Square Pants. Ironically, they have less air in them than regular Cheez-Its. Not surprisingly, they are inferior, but apparently that's all the store had. Bastards!

25 more jumping jacks.

The guys all wanted to go to Carl's Jr. and wanted me to go, too. So I ordered the smallest burger and had sprite mixed with lemonade and minute maid orange and strawberry, and didn't have a lot of that. Had some fries, but shared a lot with others. Also walked up and down the stairs, 90 stairs in all.

I did 200 stairs on the way to the car, then I mowed the front and back lawns when I get home, if you can call the dirt patch out back a lawn. Then I ate 6 wonderful buttery Keebler Club crackers and am drinking water instead of juice or a soft drink. (Yay me.)

You gotta get the heart pumping, big man. Short bursts of energy will make you tired but they won't help you in the long run.

One of the drawbacks to all the bike riding I do these days is that for it to count as beneficial exercise I have to go on extended rides. I barely break a sweat on the 25 minutes bike ride to and from work anymore. A few weeks ago I rode to Laguna Beach (about 25 miles each way) and last week I made it to where Huntington meets Westminster (about 20 miles each way). That's not me bragging... that's what I have to do in order to claim a successful workout.

I don't have time for heart pumping. Sadly.

I just did 75 more jumping jacks and had five goldfish.

Actually, you just need your street to do heart pumping stuff. One of the techniques in training in a higher cardiovascular level that my friend John taught me (www.adventX.com) is to sprint for one minute, walk one or two. When I go to the track, I jog the first two miles, and then on the third, I do that sequence. It REALLY gets the heart going, and you're able to sustain it, because you're not just sprinting. Even elite athletes should only spend 14 minutes in that high cardio state. After that, you're burning the candle at both ends. BTW, good job at getting all that exercise into your schedule. Oooo! I know. Try sprinting up the stairs. That will kick the heart a bit.

And finally, for dinner, chili w/ tamales, cheese, a dollop of sour cream and a small amount of avocado. Along with a glass of skim milk. Quite tasty, if you ask me.

I think I'm done with exercise for the day and would also like to note that I passed up cake and chocolate candy today.

You know you guys, that all sounds well and good. But I haven't even had time to run up and down the street. I've had to do what I can do while watching a baby. And I'm not going to run the stairs at work or I'll get sweaty and that's not comfortable or fun to be at work. For me, the important thing is that I'm doing more than I was. If I'm just less senditary, it will tip the scales. I had some good results with almost no exercise before the birthday.

Whatever you can do, do it as often as possible.

Me thinks there's a joke to made there somewhere.
